Cleveland Guardians Owner Larry Dolan Dies at 94

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Larry Dolan, the owner of the Cleveland Guardians, has died at the age of 94, the team announced Monday. Dolan’s passing marks the end of the longest ownership tenure in franchise history, a legacy he built over 26 years.
“Cleveland sadly lost one of their own last night,” said Bob DiBiasio, senior vice president of public affairs for the Guardians. “Mr. Dolan invested his entire life in Greater Cleveland and impacted our community on so many levels.”
Dolan’s extensive contributions spanned military service, law, business, education, and philanthropy. He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marines and was involved in numerous charitable endeavors, including the American Red Cross and the Geauga Family YMCA.
“We are saddened by the loss of our Dad, but lucky to have him as part of our lives as long as we did,” said Paul Dolan, owner/chairman/CEO of the Guardians and Dolan’s son. “He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was passionate about our community and his love of our local sports teams.”
Born and raised in Cleveland Heights, Dolan was an athlete in his youth, playing football and baseball at St. Ignatius High School. He fulfilled two dreams common to many Cleveland athletes: playing at Cleveland Municipal Stadium and owning a professional sports team.
After completing his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Notre Dame, Dolan entered military service before becoming the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Geauga County. His law career culminated in becoming President and Managing Partner of Thrasher, Dinsmore and Dolan in Chardon, Ohio.
Dolan bought the Cleveland baseball franchise on February 15, 2000, from Richard E. Jacobs. His family has maintained ownership since, achieving significant success on the field. The Guardians have the third-most wins in Major League Baseball during the past 12 seasons, with a total of 1,013 victories.
Under the Dolan family’s stewardship, the franchise has celebrated 14 winning seasons, nine postseason appearances, and two American League Central Division titles. They also hosted the 2019 MLB All-Star Week festivities.
Dolan is survived by his wife, Eva, six children, and 21 grandchildren. The family is planning private funeral arrangements.
