Despite the Cleveland Guardians‘ current 2-0 deficit in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), rookie shortstop Brayan Rocchio has emerged as a standout performer in the 2023 postseason. Rocchio’s batting prowess has been a highlight for the team, as he consistently delivers noteworthy performances at the plate.

Rocchio began his postseason journey with a 1-for-4 showing, including a double, in Game 1 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Detroit Tigers. This was followed by a sequence of reliable performances: he went 1-for-3 with a double in Game 2, 1-for-2 with a walk in Game 3, 1-for-3 with a walk and a run in Game 4, and 2-for-4 with an RBI in Game 5.

His impressive form continued in the ALCS against the New York Yankees, where he began Game 1 with a 2-for-3 performance, including a solo home run. Rocchio maintained his momentum in Game 2, recording 2-for-4 at the plate. His current playoff statistics include a .435 batting average and an impressive 1.132 OPS, a significant improvement from his regular season numbers.

During the regular season, Rocchio struggled with a .206 batting average and a .614 OPS, with his longest hitting streak being just four games. His postseason success places him in an exclusive group; Rocchio is only the second player in Major League Baseball history to have at least a seven-game hitting streak during a single postseason before achieving a regular season hitting streak of this length. The first to reach this milestone was Timo Perez of the New York Mets in 2000.

However, Rocchio’s remarkable postseason has not been without its setbacks. In Game 2 of the ALCS, the 23-year-old dropped a routine fly ball that resulted in the Yankees taking an early lead, despite his standing as a Gold Glove finalist. He also struck out with the bases loaded during a critical moment in the fourth inning, contributing to the Guardians’ 6-3 loss.

Rocchio is set to redeem himself and continue his offensive streak in Game 3 at Progressive Field on Thursday, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:08 p.m. ET. He will be batting in the No. 9 position as the series progresses.
