Clippers’ Simmons Faces Criticism as Playoffs Approach

LOS ANGELES, CA — Ben Simmons, forward for the Los Angeles Clippers, is facing renewed scrutiny as the NBA playoffs loom. Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue challenged Simmons to ramp up his offensive contributions during an ESPN segment aired on Friday.
On the program, ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith criticized the former All-Star for his perceived lack of aggression on the court. Simmons, who is set to earn $39.2 million for the 2024-2025 season, has not delivered performances reflective of his substantial salary, which ranks as the 27th highest in the league.
“The fact Ty Lue said what he said is more evidence that Ben Simmons has been stealing money,” Smith said. “When we looked at Ben Simmons with the potential, this brother is so special as a talent, but my Lord, what a disappointment. It’s all because of a willingness—or lack thereof—rather than ability.”
Simmons was traded to the Clippers earlier this season. So far, he has appeared in 18 games for the team, averaging 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists while logging just over 16 minutes per contest.
Former NBA forward Danny Green, who played with Simmons on the Philadelphia 76ers, weighed in during the same broadcast. Although he acknowledged Simmons’ need for greater aggression, he provided a more sympathetic perspective. “I just think he’s in point guard mode too much, so yes, he does need to be more aggressive, but he’s used to being a point guard,” Green said. “It’s a mental hump that he needs to get over, but we’re being nice today. I’m not going to say he’s stealing money.”
As the Clippers prepare for the playoffs, the team’s success may hinge on Simmons’ ability to adapt his game to take on a more offensive role. His progress will be scrutinized closely, especially given the high expectations associated with his contract.
