Club America Eyes Comeback Against Chivas in Champions Cup Clash

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — In a high-stakes matchup, Club America will aim to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Chivas Guadalajara in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday. This encounter marks the third meeting between the two Liga MX rivals in just over a week, raising the stakes as they battle for a coveted spot in the quarterfinals.
Chivas secured a narrow victory in the first leg, with an own goal from Club America’s Sebastian Caceres sealing the 1-0 result at Estadio Akron. Both matchups so far have been defined by defensive tactics, resulting in only one goal in a combined 180 minutes of play. The dynamic shifts as the series heads to Mexico City, where Club America seeks the support of their home fans.
Despite leading the series, Chivas faces pressure to maintain their advantage on the road. They’ll need an organized defense to withstand America’s aggressive attack, particularly after Club America recorded 17 shots yet failed to score in their last outing. Chivas center back Gilberto Sepulveda commented, “We have to remain focused. We know America will come out strong at home.”
Club America boasts an impressive home record this season, having not lost at Estadio Azteca in league play and scoring nine goals while allowing only two. Winger Alex Zendejas, a key player for America, is eager to bounce back after being left off the U.S. Men’s National Team roster.
“This is a crucial moment for us,” said Zendejas. “We need to take advantage of our home field and our fans to turn things around.”
The predicted starting lineups for Club America include: Luis Malagon, Cristian Borja, Ramon Juarez, Sebastian Caceres, Kevin Alvarez, Alvaro Fidalgo, Alan Cervantes, Brian Rodriguez, Erick Sanchez, Alex Zendejas, and Henry Martin. Meanwhile, Chivas is expected to field: Jose Rangel, Miguel Tapias, Gilberto Sepulveda, Jose Castillo, Mateo Chavez, Luis Romo, Erick Gutierrez, Alan Mozo, Roberto Alvarado, Alan Pulido, and Hugo Camberos.
The stakes are high for Chivas as they seek to protect their lead against a relentless Club America. “We have done well so far, but we know one mistake could cost us everything,” Chivas forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez remarked.
As the tension builds, kickoff is set for 9:30 PM ET at Estadio Azteca. Fans can watch live on Telemundo and Universo as both teams strive to secure their future in the tournament.
