Club América’s Sub-23 Team Secures 1-0 Victory Over Querétaro in Clausura 2025 Opener
Club América‘s Sub-23 team, led by interim coach Diego Cervantes, kicked off their Clausura 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Querétaro at Estadio Corregidora on Saturday. The lone goal came from Antonio Álvarez in the 64th minute, securing three crucial points for the Águilas as they aim for a historic tetracampeonato.
Despite missing head coach André Jardine and several key players, América’s young squad demonstrated resilience against a struggling Querétaro side. The Gallos, who have consistently underperformed in recent Liga MX seasons, failed to capitalize on their opportunities, leaving them empty-handed in their season opener.
The match was not without controversy. In the 41st minute, Querétaro’s Franco Russo was shown a straight red card after a dangerous tackle on América’s Erick Sánchez. The incident was reviewed by VAR, and referee Jesús Rafael López upheld the decision. Sánchez, who received medical attention, was able to continue playing and even took the resulting free kick.
Former referee Felipe Ramos Rizo weighed in on another contentious moment, stating that a potential handball in the closing minutes, which could have benefited Querétaro, was correctly not called. “The decision was well-marked, and the controversy should end there,” Ramos Rizo said.
Club América will now prepare for their next match against Xolos de Tijuana on January 16 at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes. The game, scheduled for 8:10 PM local time, will be broadcast on TUDN and ViX.
