Coco Gauff Tennis Match Loss

MIAMI, Fla. — March 25, 2025 — Coco Gauff suffered a shocking defeat to Poland’s Magda Linette, while defending champion Danielle Collins also fell to Aryna Sabalenka in the Miami Open on Monday, marking a disappointing day for American tennis players.

Gauff, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by the unseeded Linette, who celebrated her fifth career win against a top-five player. Gauff struggled throughout the match, recording 12 double faults and committing 45 unforced errors.

“It wasn’t great today,” Gauff said following her defeat. “It hasn’t been the last few weeks — I’m trying to figure that out. Definitely not happy about it. Just one of those days when I felt awful in everything on the court.”

Linette’s victory advances her to only her second career WTA 1000 quarterfinal against No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini.

Collins faced a similar fate, unable to overcome the powerful play of the No. 1 seed Sabalenka, losing 6-4, 6-4. This defeat marked Collins’ seventh consecutive loss to Sabalenka, winning only three sets across those matches.

Last year, Collins won her biggest title in Miami, but she was unable to defend it against Sabalenka’s skillful shots and court control. Sabalenka is set to meet Zheng in the quarterfinals, who she has also never lost to in their encounters.

Elsewhere, Emma Raducanu reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 for the first time in her career, defeating No. 17 seed Amanda Anisimova. Raducanu’s current performance mirrors her extraordinary run during the 2021 US Open, as she has now won four straight main draw matches this season.

Raducanu’s next opponent will be No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula, the only American woman remaining in the draw after her victory over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, winning 6-2, 6-3. This success marks Pegula’s fourth consecutive appearance in the Miami quarterfinals.

In the men’s draw, defeats piled up for American players, with No. 16 seed Frances Tiafoe and Reilly Opelka both exiting the tournament. No. 12 seed Tommy Paul was eliminated on Sunday as well.

The exceptions were No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz and fellow Americans Sebastian Korda and Brandon Nakashima, who progressed to the round of 16. Fritz secured the sole U.S. win on Monday, defeating Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 6-3, and will next face Australian Adam Walton.

Tiafoe’s match was a nail-biter, losing to emerging French talent Arthur Fils 7-6(11), 5-7, 6-2. Despite experiencing cramps in the final set, Fils persisted to secure the victory.

“It was very tough,” Fils said. “When I got into the third set, I was cramping and I couldn’t find the rhythm anymore. I tried to relax and play as fast as I could and hit as strong as I could. Somehow, it worked.”

Fritz faces Walton next, while Nakashima will go against Grigor Dimitrov, and Korda will challenge Gaël Monfils in the upcoming rounds.
