Cody Martin Phoenix Suns Basketball Debut

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Cody Martin is poised to make his debut for the Phoenix Suns in Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers after recovering from a sports hernia injury. Martin, who last played on Jan. 24 as a member of the Charlotte Hornets, expressed optimism about his return following a morning shootaround citing that his body feels good “for the most part.”

“I don’t think anybody in this gym is 100%,” Martin said. “It’s tough to say that. We’re all dealing with something, but the biggest thing is trying to get as close as you can to who you feel like you are and ultimately be able to impact the game.”

Martin, acquired by the Suns in a trade before the 2025 deadline that sent Jusuf Nurkic to Charlotte, has an average of 7.8 points per game, marking a career high in his sixth NBA season. With Grayson Allen sidelined due to a left foot sprain, Martin’s inclusion in the lineup for Friday night seems likely.

“Cody is a smart player,” said Mason Plumlee, Suns forward and Martin’s former teammate in Charlotte. “He’s a really good on-ball defender. He scores it well from his position.” Plumlee further emphasized Martin’s resilience, saying, “A lot of guys, mentally, they can’t handle fewer shot opportunities. Cody is mentally tough and efficient in limited touches.”

The Suns currently have a record of 30-36 and are battling for the 10th seed and the final play-in spot in the Western Conference. With just 15 games remaining in the regular season, the team is focused on maximizing their performance to secure a playoff spot.

“I’m trying to play every night,” Martin said, staying positive about his recovery efforts. “The staff and my team are doing a good job of making sure I’m prepared. We’re just trying to do everything we can.”

Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer discussed the importance of Martin’s health and integration into the team’s rotation. “Just getting him healthy, I think, is realistic,” Budenholzer noted. “We still have 25% of the season left, probably a good four to six weeks. I think there’s hope for him to fit into the rotation.”

During the Suns’ recent four-game road trip, practice time was limited, prompting the team to keep Martin in Phoenix to work with the Valley Suns, their G League affiliate. Martin took part in high-intensity workouts to prepare for game scenarios.

“They did a good job getting me prepared and putting me in situations that simulate the game as much as possible,” Martin said, reflecting on his time with the Valley Suns. “Competing on ball screens and guarding the ball were key aspects of my training.”

While Martin acknowledges the differences between training and real games, he remains focused on contributing to the Suns’ success. “I’m going to come here to work. When it is time to play, I get my opportunity and do everything I can to help win,” he stated.
