Cody Simon Leads Ohio State to CFP Semifinals After Rose Bowl MVP Performance
DALLAS – Cody Simon, Ohio State‘s standout linebacker and West Orange native, has become the heart of the Buckeyes’ defense as they prepare for the College Football Playoff (CFP) semifinal against Texas. Simon, a fifth-year senior and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, was named the Rose Bowl Defensive MVP after leading Ohio State to a 42-21 victory over Oregon with 11 tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for loss.
Simon, who earned his finance degree 13 months ago, has emerged as a full-time starter this season, earning praise from coaches and teammates alike. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles called him a “future president of the United States,” highlighting his leadership and character. “He’s an unbelievable human being and a great team leader,” Knowles said. Simon’s loyalty to Ohio State, despite the allure of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, has also set him apart. “I love Ohio State. I love coach (Ryan) Day,” Simon said. “I built so many good, life-long-lasting relationships with these guys.”
Simon’s on-field performance has been equally impressive. He leads the team with 97 tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss heading into Friday’s Cotton Bowl. His versatility has caught the attention of Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, who noted Simon’s ability to stop the run and pressure the quarterback. “You can feel his presence,” Sarkisian said. “He’s a heck of a player.”
Teammates credit Simon with elevating Ohio State’s defense, which ranks among the nation’s best. Safety Jordan Hancock called him “the most trustworthy person on the team,” while junior linebacker Sonny Styles praised Simon’s mentorship during his transition from safety. “He does everything the right way,” Styles said. “He’s getting the fruits of his labor.”
As Ohio State prepares for its semifinal clash, Simon remains focused on the ultimate goal: a national championship. “We’re just fighting to get another opportunity to play with each other,” he said. “We don’t want to end this run right now.”
