MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston baseball team suffered a dramatic 16-15 loss to Hofstra on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.

Freshman Landon Penfield had a standout performance, hitting two home runs, including a grand slam that tied the game in the eighth inning. The Cougars ended their regular season with a record of 34-20 overall and 15-12 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

CofC started strong, taking a 6-0 lead after scoring three runs in both the first and second innings. However, Hofstra responded with a seven-run fourth inning, taking an 8-6 lead.

In the seventh, Hofstra extended its lead to 15-7, but Charleston rallied back in the eighth inning, scoring seven runs. Penfield’s grand slam brought the score to 15-15.

Senior Dariyan Pendergrass also had an impressive game, tying his career high by scoring four runs and hitting his fourth home run of the season. He also stole two bases, bringing his total to 39 for the season.

Of note, Charleston now holds a 21-12 advantage against Hofstra in their all-time series and is 16-3 at home. Penfield joins fellow freshman Alex LaCoste as the only Cougars to hit multiple home runs in a game this season.

Pendergrass’ achievement in stolen bases surpasses Brett Gardner’s record of 38 set in 2005, ranking him third all-time for a single season in the school’s history.

In Saturday’s matchup, Charleston drew 12 walks, matching their second-most walks in a game this season.

The Cougars are set to compete in the opening round of the 2025 CAA Baseball Championship on Wednesday, May 21, with their opponent to be determined once the regular season concludes.
