College Football Teams on the Brink: USC, Oklahoma State, and Kentucky Face Bowl Eligibility Uncertainty
As the college football season enters its critical phase, several prominent teams are facing significant challenges in securing bowl eligibility. Among these are USC, Oklahoma State, and Kentucky, each with their own set of hurdles to overcome.
USC, with a 3-4 record, is in a precarious position despite its strong preseason expectations. The Trojans have struggled to adjust to the physicality of the Big Ten, suffering losses to Minnesota and Maryland. Injuries have further compounded their issues, and their remaining schedule includes tough matchups against Rutgers, Washington, Nebraska, UCLA, and No. 12 Notre Dame. USC’s ability to secure at least six wins is uncertain, given their recent performance and the demanding nature of their upcoming games.
Oklahoma State, also with a 3-4 record, has experienced a dramatic decline from its preseason ranking of No. 3 in the Big 12 media poll. The Cowboys are on a four-game losing streak, struggling on both offense and defense. Their remaining schedule includes games against Baylor, Arizona State, TCU, Texas Tech, and Colorado. While their schedule suggests potential for three more wins, the team’s current form raises doubts about their ability to finish the season strongly.
Kentucky, under coach Mark Stoops, has traditionally been a reliable presence in bowl games, but this season has been different. With a 3-4 record, the Wildcats are struggling, particularly in passing, where they rank last in the SEC with just 167.9 yards per game. Their remaining games include Auburn, No. 7 Tennessee, Murray State, No. 5 Texas, and Louisville. Kentucky will need to pull off at least one upset to reach the six-win mark necessary for bowl eligibility.
These teams are not alone in their struggles, as several other major programs are also on the brink of missing out on postseason play. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining which teams can turn their seasons around and secure a spot in a bowl game.
