Collision of Maersk Container Ship Causes Significant Damage to The Leeuwin
A significant maritime incident occurred at the Fremantle Port on Friday morning when the Maersk container ship collided with The Leeuwin, a beloved tall ship.
According to Fremantle Ports Authority’s Chief Executive Jody Ransom, the 332-metre Maersk vessel crashed into The Leeuwin while the ship was docked, resulting in its mast being severely damaged. Two crew members who were aboard the tall ship at the time of the incident were promptly transported to the hospital, with reports indicating that their injuries are non-life threatening.
Ransom explained that the bow of the container ship struck The Leeuwin, while the stern collided with a berth and the roof of the adjacent Maritime Museum. Initially, there were speculations about adverse weather conditions contributing to the accident, but these claims have yet to be verified.
Currently, an investigation is underway, with authorities monitoring the situation closely. Ransom stated she has conducted a visual assessment of the damage, noting that while there appears to be no hull damage, extensive repairs will be needed for the masts and deck structures.
The Leeuwin is a significant cultural asset in Perth, well-known for offering sailing experiences since the 1980s where over 40,000 young people have participated in its educational programs. Jay Weatherill, chairman of the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation, expressed concern over the incident and the impact it will have on future programs.
Further assessments of the Maersk vessel’s ability to continue sailing after loading operations will also be conducted. Operations at the port and the Maritime Museum are expected to recommence later in the afternoon.
