Colombia Defeats Brazil 1-0 to Top Group B in Sudamericano Sub-20
VALENCIA, Venezuela — Colombia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brazil on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Estadio Misael Delgado, clinching the top spot in Group B of the Sudamericano Sub-20 tournament. Neyser Villarreal’s second-half goal proved decisive as Colombia advanced to face Paraguay in the next round.
The match, part of the fifth round of the group stage, saw both teams battling for supremacy in a tightly contested game. Colombia, already assured of a place in the next round, aimed to solidify their position, while Brazil sought to challenge for the group lead.
Colombia’s goalkeeper, Alexei Rojas, emerged as a key figure, making several crucial saves to deny Brazil’s attacking efforts. His performance included a standout moment in the 42nd minute when he deflected a powerful shot from Nathan Fernandes, keeping the scoreline level at halftime.
The breakthrough came just a minute into the second half. Neyser Villarreal capitalized on a well-timed attack, delivering a precise cross-shot that beat Brazil’s goalkeeper to give Colombia the lead. Villarreal nearly doubled the advantage in the 77th minute, but his effort was thwarted by Brazil’s keeper, Longo.
Brazil pressed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Colombia’s defense held firm. The final whistle confirmed Colombia’s victory and their position as group leaders, setting up a clash with Paraguay in the hexagonal final stage of the tournament.
“It was a tough match, but the team showed great character and discipline,” said Colombia’s coach, César Torres. “We knew Brazil would come strong, but our players executed the plan perfectly.”
Colombia’s journey in the tournament has been marked by consistent performances, including a 1-1 draw with Argentina, a 1-0 win over Ecuador, and a thrilling 3-2 victory against Bolivia. Their next challenge will be against Paraguay on Tuesday, February 4, as they aim to continue their quest for the Sudamericano Sub-20 title.
