BOGOTÁ, Colombia (AP) — The potential for Kevin Mier, a 24-year-old goalkeeper currently playing for Cruz Azul in Mexico, to switch national allegiances from Colombia to Mexico is gaining traction. This shift comes as Mier has been notably absent from recent call-ups to the Colombian national team by coach Néstor Lorenzo.

Mier’s exclusion has fueled speculation, particularly after he was overlooked for critical World Cup qualifying matches against Brazil and Paraguay. Instead, Lorenzo opted for veteran goalkeepers David Ospina and Álvaro Montero, a decision that has sparked controversy given Mier’s notable performances in the Liga MX.

“Kevin has shown tremendous skill and dedication,” a source close to the team said. “It’s puzzling that he wasn’t considered for the national squad given his track record.”

Despite lacking international appearances in the recent qualifiers, Mier has shone in Mexico, playing a pivotal role in keeping Cruz Azul competitive and advancing to the semifinals of the Concachampions. His performance in the league has positioned him as one of the standout goalkeepers in Mexico, attracting interest from the Mexican national team.

The idea of Mier pursuing Mexican nationality is becoming more feasible in light of his absence from the Colombian lineup, especially as Mexican officials have reportedly been monitoring his progress closely. Given that Mexico is actively searching for a reliable goalkeeper, Mier’s name has emerged as a viable option.

If Mier decides to make the switch, it would not only close the door on his hopes of representing Colombia but also bolster a Mexican team eager for a dependable presence in goal. “Mexico needs someone who can step up in crucial moments, and Kevin could be that player,” said a Mexican football analyst.

The ongoing situation has raised questions about the transparency of the Colombian Football Federation’s decision-making process. Several analysts have speculated that extrinsic factors may be playing a role in roster selections.

Despite the swirling rumors, neither the Colombian federation nor Lorenzo has publicly addressed the potential switch or the recent criticisms surrounding their roster choices. Formerly lauded for guiding Colombia to the finals of the Copa América, Lorenzo is now facing backlash for his handling of player selections during the World Cup qualifiers.

This season, Mier has appeared in 15 matches for Cruz Azul in Liga MX, logging a total of 1,350 minutes on the pitch, while accumulating 360 minutes in International Concachampions play. His commendable performances have seen him rank among the top players in the Mexican league.

Born on November 30, 2002, in Barrancabermeja, Colombia, Mier’s professional journey began in the youth divisions of Atlético Nacional, one of Colombia’s premier football clubs. His early career showcased his extraordinary reflexes and poise under pressure, propelling him to the first team.

He made his professional debut in 2021, quickly establishing himself as one of Colombia’s most promising keepers, especially in international competitions like the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. After a series of impressive seasons at Atlético Nacional, Mier transferred to Cruz Azul, marking a significant step in his career in one of the most competitive leagues in the Americas.
