Colombian Soccer Players In Action

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil – Colombian forwards Marino Hinestroza, Rafael Santos Borré, and Johan Stiven Carbonero are set to take center stage on Thursday as Atlético Nacional faces Internacional in the second group stage match of the Copa Libertadores at Beira-Rio Stadium.

Hinestroza, who shined in the last international match with a goal and two assists in a 3-0 victory over Nacional de Uruguay, has become a key player for Atlético Nacional. He played a crucial role in the team’s recent wins in the Copa Colombia and the Liga Colombiana 2024-I.

“Marino has been instrumental this season,” said Atlético Nacional’s coach. “His performances have led to calls for his inclusion in the national team.” Despite his efforts, Hinestroza has yet to see significant playing time with Colombia in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, remaining on the bench for matches against Brazil and Paraguay.

On the other side, Internacional’s Borré and Carbonero are both vying for starting positions in a competitive attack. Borré, who joined the team last season, has struggled with minor injuries, which have impacted his performance. He appeared in 29 matches across various competitions, but injuries have sidelined him at times.

“Enner [Valencia] has earned the right to be the starter, but I’m pleased with how Borré is working to regain his position,” said Internacional’s coach Roger Machado. “We need to manage our players carefully, and today demonstrated Borré’s intent to return to form.”

Borré recently missed important matches in the Campeonato Gaucho due to a thigh injury but is eager to make an impact in Libertadores. Meanwhile, Carbonero, who arrived from Racing after winning the Conmebol Sudamericana, has been steadily increasing his contributions to the squad, scoring two goals in 11 appearances this season.

Carbonero’s adaptability and recent performance, including a substitute appearance in a Libertadores match against Bahía, reflect his potential critical role in upcoming games. His recent promotion to the national team for the qualifiers, despite limited playing time, underscores his growth.

As Nacional prepares to rely on Hinestroza’s impact and Internacional debates the inclusion of either Borré or Carbonero, this clash is not just about team points but also serves as a litmus test for their national selections in future matches. With both clubs aiming for a stronger position in the tournament, the spotlight on these Colombian talents will be intense.

All eyes will be on the pitch Thursday night as these three players could very well influence not only the outcome of the game but also their prospects for national team consideration.
