INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly in discussions with Jerome Henderson, a veteran defensive backs coach, about joining their coaching staff. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the potential hiring follows a lackluster defensive performance during the 2024 season.
Henderson, who spent last season with the New York Giants as their defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, has extensive experience across multiple NFL teams. He has worked for the Giants over the past five seasons and has previously held positions with the New York Jets (2006-08), Cleveland Browns (2009-11), Dallas Cowboys (2012-15), and Atlanta Falcons (2016-19).
As a player, Henderson logged eight seasons in the NFL from 1991 to 1998, playing as a defensive back for teams including the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and others. His background as a former player complements his coaching experience, making him a strong candidate for improving the Colts’ secondary.
Last year, Henderson interviewed for the Giants’ defensive coordinator position but did not secure the job. However, the team valued his contributions enough to promote him to passing game coordinator in 2024.
Following the disappointing performance of former defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s unit, Colts leadership is keen on revamping their defensive strategy. Analyst expectations are that the changes in coaching will signal a new philosophy, especially in the team’s secondary.
“We are focused on building a strong defense that can solidify our rankings in the league,” Colts general manager said in a recent press conference. “Hiring coaches with proven track records in defense is a key part of that strategy.”
Additionally, the Colts have already secured Chris Hewitt as their passing game coordinator and secondary coach. The addition of Henderson marks a clear trend in reshaping Indianapolis’ defensive coaching staff with an emphasis on bolstering their defensive backfield.
The Colts finished last season with a turbulent defense, and changes are necessary to maintain the stability of the franchise moving forward. If they hope to contend for a playoff spot next season, they cannot afford another disappointing year.
