INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts have named Lou Anarumo as their new defensive coordinator, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media on January 20, 2025. Anarumo, who was previously dismissed by the Cincinnati Bengals after the 2024 season, will take over a Colts defense that struggled under former coordinator Gus Bradley.

Anarumo joined the Bengals in 2019 alongside head coach Zac Taylor and played a pivotal role in leading the team to the Super Bowl after the 2021 season. However, Cincinnati’s defensive performance declined in recent years, culminating in his departure. The Colts are betting on Anarumo’s experience and a change of scenery to revitalize their defense.

The Colts fired Gus Bradley following the conclusion of the 2024 regular season, marking the end of a disappointing campaign. Indianapolis finished with a 7-10 record, ranking in the bottom half of the league in several defensive categories, including points allowed and total yards surrendered.

Anarumo’s hiring comes amid a wave of coaching changes across the NFL. Earlier this week, former New York Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich accepted the defensive coordinator position with the Atlanta Falcons, disrupting other teams’ plans. Ulbrich had been considered a top candidate for defensive coordinator roles with the San Francisco 49ers and a potential staff under former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is expected to land a head coaching job this offseason.

According to Rapoport, Johnson had identified Ulbrich as his preferred defensive coordinator but will now turn to former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen to fill the role. Meanwhile, the Colts are hopeful that Anarumo can replicate his early success with the Bengals and help the team return to playoff contention.

“The Colts are looking for stability and leadership on defense,” said a league source familiar with the hiring. “Anarumo has a proven track record, and they believe he can turn things around.”

If Anarumo fails to deliver improved results, the Colts could face broader organizational changes next year. The team has not made the playoffs since 2020 and is under pressure to compete in a highly competitive AFC South division.
