Jonathan Allen Nfl Trade News

INDIANAPOLIS — The Washington Commanders have granted two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen permission to seek a trade, sources informed CBS Sports.

Allen, who was the Commanders’ first-round pick in 2017, finds himself in the final year of his contract with the team. His base salary of $15.5 million for the 2025 season remains unguaranteed.

Throughout his eight-year career with Washington, Allen has proven to be a key player. He signed a four-year contract extension worth $72 million in 2021, a deal that was followed by two consecutive Pro Bowl appearances.

Despite his accolades, Allen’s 2024 season was marred by injury; he tore his pectoral muscle and ultimately missed half of the year. In his eight appearances, he recorded three sacks and participated in all three of Washington’s postseason games.

The Commanders seem to be bracing for a potential departure of the star defensive tackle. In 2023, they extended another key player on the defensive line with a $90 million contract and also drafted a defensive tackle in the second round.

Allen carries the third-highest cap number on the Commanders in 2025 at $22.47 million. A trade or outright release of Allen would clear nearly $17 million in cap space for the team.

Multiple teams have expressed interest in Allen, with discussions ongoing expected to progress at the Scouting Combine taking place this week in Indianapolis.
