Washington Commanders Jonathan Allen News

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders are on the verge of releasing defensive tackle Jonathan Allen if they cannot find a trade partner. General Manager Adam Peters confirmed last week that the team is exploring options for Allen, who is set to have a cap hit of $22.3 million in 2025.

According to a report from Michael Silver of The Athletic, the two-time Pro Bowler could be let go as a cost-cutting measure before June 1, which would save the team $16.3 million in cap space. Allen, 30, entered the league as the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and has spent his entire eight-year career with the Commanders.

Allen’s contract includes a base salary of $15.5 million, with none of it guaranteed. He missed nine games in the 2024 season due to a torn left pectoral muscle, but returned for the last two regular-season games and played in all three postseason games as the Commanders reached the NFC Championship Game.

“He’s a very good player who can play both the run and the pass and just goes about his business,” said Cleveland Browns guard Joel Bitonio, highlighting Allen’s professionalism and work ethic following his recovery.

Despite his successful return, the Commanders are moving toward reworking their defensive line, a transition that has already included the departure of Montez Sweat. Peters allowed Allen and his agent to seek trade opportunities, emphasizing the team’s desire to give him the chance to find a suitable situation.

“We wanted to give him and his representation a chance to explore other opportunities,” Peters said. “Everything’s still on the table in terms of whether it’s a trade or staying here or whatever.”

In a perfect world, the Commanders would restructure or extend Allen’s contract, as he expressed a desire to remain with the team. “What my agent and I have always said is, when you have two parties who have mutual interest in accomplishing the same goal, something will get done,” he stated in January.

Allen has a commendable track record, tallying 42 sacks in 108 starts over his career with the Commanders. He quickly established himself as a key figure in the team’s defense alongside fellow tackle Daron Payne.

If released, Allen is expected to attract interest from multiple teams around the league. According to reports, the Seattle Seahawks previously inquired about acquiring Allen around the 2023 trade deadline. However, Seahawks management has since undergone changes, leading to uncertainty about their interest moving forward.

As the free agency period approaches, Allen finds himself at a crossroads that may land him on a new roster. Several teams could potentially benefit from his experience, positioning him as a valuable asset, whether in a trade or free agency.
