Commanders Prepare for 2025 NFL Draft Amid Limited Picks and High Expectations

ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters addressed the media on Tuesday ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, underscoring the team’s unique position as they prepare for limited selections this year.
Holding only five picks, the Commanders’ strategy deviates from their usual draft-building approach. Last year, their nine-member rookie class remains pivotal for improvement. Peters noted that last year’s class, highlighted by offensive rookie of the year quarterback, along with this year’s picks, provides the team with a solid foundation.
Despite the fewer picks, Peters is optimistic about the prospects the team aims to acquire. “We’re open to everything,” he said. “We put ourselves in a position not to force something.” However, trading up for higher picks seems unlikely.
With the 29th overall pick, the Commanders are considering potential edge rushers and pass defenders, a position they desperately need to strengthen. Peters described this year’s class as “deep,” indicating there are various options available.
Last year’s rookie class carries significant responsibility for improvement this season, with key players like defensive tackle Johnny Newton and tight end Ben Sinnott expected to step up. “They’ve worked really hard this offseason to improve physically and mentally,” said assistant general manager Lance Newmark.
Peters also addressed character concerns often associated with draft prospects, emphasizing thorough research by scouts to assess each player’s background. “It really starts with the scouts… to determine how much of it is real,” he explained.
As the draft approaches, the Commanders aim to strategically navigate their limited options while focusing on building a strong, cohesive team.
