Commanders Sign OT Foster Sarell to One-Year Deal

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders have announced the signing of offensive tackle Foster Sarell to a one-year contract. The move comes as the team seeks to bolster its offensive line ahead of the upcoming season.
Sarell, 26, spent the past four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he participated in 11 games last year, playing a total of 40 snaps on offense and 47 on special teams. His journey to the NFL began when he went undrafted in 2021, subsequently signing with the Baltimore Ravens before moving to the Giants‘ practice squad.
In his brief NFL career, Sarell has accumulated 338 offensive snaps and an additional 129 special teams snaps. Although he did not see action during his rookie season, he made three starts in 2022, which were his first career starts. Over the past season, he has primarily served as a reserve player.
The Commanders are undergoing significant changes to their offensive line, which includes the recent acquisition of Laremy Tunsil through a trade. Tunsil is expected to solidify the left tackle position, allowing last year’s starter Brandon Coleman to potentially shift to right tackle or guard. The right guard position is currently uncertain following Sam Cosmi’s ACL injury, which may lead to Andrew Wylie stepping in as a replacement.
With the departure of swing tackle Cornelius Lucas through free agency, Sarell’s addition is viewed as critical for depth and competition along the line. His experience with the Chargers may provide the Commanders with the necessary versatility to strengthen their offensive front.
“We needed to add quality depth and competition, and Foster fits that mold,” said a Commanders spokesperson. “He has shown potential in his previous roles, and we believe he can contribute significantly.”
As training camp approaches, Sarell will likely compete for a backup role, vying to demonstrate his abilities and secure a spot on the final roster for the upcoming season.
