Commanders Sign Offensive Lineman Nate Herbig for Added Depth

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Commanders have strengthened their offensive line by signing guard Nate Herbig to a one-year deal, as reported by ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler. The 26-year-old player joins the team after missing the entire 2024 season due to a torn rotator cuff.
Herbig, who began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, has played for multiple teams over the past four seasons. He logged 33 games with 17 starts for Philly before a season with the New York Jets in 2022, where he made 11 starts. In 2023, he appeared in all 17 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers, contributing significantly with a snap share of 15 percent on offense and 13 percent on special teams.
The addition of Herbig is seen as a strategic move for the Commanders, who have been looking to enhance the protection for their young quarterback. In addition to Herbig, the team recently traded for left tackle Laremy Tunsil, aiming to build a stronger offensive front for the upcoming season.
“Nate is a versatile lineman who brings depth and experience to our offensive line,” said a Commanders spokesperson. “We believe he can compete for playing time and provide valuable support this season.”
While the terms of Herbig’s contract have not been disclosed, it is expected that the Commanders secured him at a cost-effective price, particularly in light of the extensive financial commitments to other players in the free agency market.
Looking ahead, the Commanders will look to integrate Herbig into their lineup during training camp, as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming NFL season. His previous experience and ability to play multiple positions on the interior line could make him a key asset as the team develops its offensive strategy.
As the league approaches the 2025 season, teams across the NFL are making critical roster decisions and signings during the current free agency period, highlighting the dynamic nature of player movement within the league.
