Commanders Stun Buccaneers in Thrilling Wild Card Upset
TAMPA, Fla. — The Washington Commanders ended an 18-year playoff win drought with a dramatic 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a wild-card matchup Sunday night at Raymond James Stadium. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels led a game-winning drive capped by a 37-yard field goal from Zane Gonzalez, which ricocheted off the upright before going through as time expired.
Daniels, making his postseason debut, completed 24 of 35 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns while adding 36 rushing yards. His poise in the final minutes sealed the victory, setting up a divisional-round clash with the top-seeded Detroit Lions.
The Buccaneers, who clinched the NFC South title in Week 18, saw their season end in disappointment. Despite strong performances from quarterback Baker Mayfield (12-of-15, 131 yards, two touchdowns) and wide receiver Mike Evans (six catches, 84 yards, one touchdown), a critical fourth-quarter fumble by Mayfield proved costly. The turnover gave Washington possession at Tampa Bay’s 13-yard line, leading to a touchdown that tied the game.
Washington’s defense held firm in the closing minutes, forcing a punt after a key third-down stop. Daniels then orchestrated a 10-play, 60-yard drive, converting a crucial third down to set up Gonzalez’s game-winning kick. “It’s a surreal feeling,” Daniels said postgame. “We believed in each other, and we got it done.”
The Commanders’ victory marks their first playoff win since the 2005 season. They overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half, with Daniels connecting with Dyami Brown for a 10-yard touchdown and Terry McLaurin for a 5-yard score. McLaurin finished with five catches for 79 yards, while Brown added two receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Tampa Bay’s defense, bolstered by the return of safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and cornerback Jamel Dean, struggled to contain Washington’s offense in critical moments. The Buccaneers’ season ends as the first division winner eliminated in this year’s playoffs.
Washington now advances to face the Detroit Lions on Saturday, aiming to continue their improbable postseason run.
