U.S. Commitment to Defeating ISIS in Syria Remains Steadfast Amid Regime Change
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh has reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to defeating ISIS in Syria, despite the recent overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad‘s regime. In a press briefing on December 9, Singh emphasized that the U.S. Central Command will continue to work with allies and partners to prevent ISIS from reestablishing a foothold in the country.
Singh highlighted recent military actions, including precision airstrikes conducted by U.S. forces on December 7 against known ISIS camps and operatives in central Syria. These strikes targeted over 75 targets, underscoring the U.S. resolve to degrade ISIS capabilities.
CENTCOM Commander Army Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla reinforced this stance, stating, “There should be no doubt — we will not allow ISIS to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria.” He also warned that any organizations supporting ISIS would be held accountable.
The fall of the Assad regime has introduced both opportunities and risks for the region. Singh described it as a “historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria” and a “moment of risk and uncertainty.” The U.S. is committed to working with local partners, including the Syrian Democratic Forces, to ensure that ISIS cannot reestablish a safe haven.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III also engaged in discussions with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler to address the developments in Syria. They emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and adhering to international humanitarian norms, as well as the need for close coordination between the U.S. and Turkey to manage the volatile situation).
