Controversial Red Card Dismisses Hinestroza as Nacional Falls to Internacional

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil — Atlético Nacional‘s Marino Hinestroza received a controversial red card during the team’s 3-0 loss to Internacional on April 10 in the Copa Libertadores, sparking debate over the referee’s decision.
The incident occurred in the 70th minute when Hinestroza, attempting to regain possession of the ball, fouled Internacional’s Vitinho. Initially shown a yellow card by Chilean referee Felipe González, the decision was reversed after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
CONMEBOL later released audio of the VAR communication, which indicated that the foul was deemed “high intensity” and posed a risk of injury. “There is a very high intensity and it can twist the ankle. To me, it’s serious foul play,” stated a VAR official, urging González to reconsider the initial ruling.
The alteration of the referee’s decision drew considerable frustration from Atlético Nacional, as they had been competing fiercely in the match prior to Hinestroza’s dismissal, which significantly altered the game’s dynamics.
The game’s circumstances assessed by analysts question the validity of the red card. Former referee José Borda remarked that the expulsion was unjustified, categorizing it as a play warranting only a yellow card. Wilmer Barahona concurred, noting that Hinestroza’s foot was not elevated and his challenge was not from behind, suggesting a lesser penalty was more appropriate.
Despite the setback of losing a key player, Atlético Nacional had bolstered its offensive efforts in the first half, coming close to scoring multiple times, only to falter after the red card. Internacional capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Alan Patrick scoring a penalty after a foul by Nacional’s Dairon Asprilla.
With Hinestroza now facing disciplinary action under Article 12 of the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Code, he could be suspended for at least one match due to serious foul play, which would keep him out of the upcoming game against Bahia on April 24.
Following the decisive defeat, Atlético Nacional sits in third place in Group F of the Copa Libertadores with three points, trailing behind Internacional and Bahia, each with four points. The club must rally in its next matches to maintain hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
This incident not only highlights the challenges faced by national teams in international competition but also underscores the contentious nature of officiating in high-stakes matches.
