Sporting Gijon Racing Santander Match Controversy

GIJÓN, Spain — The match between Sporting de Gijón and Racing de Santander ended in controversy over a decision made by referee Manuel Jesús Orellana. The incident occurred just before Mario García attempted a shot that, if successful, would have tied the game at 2-2 for Gijón.

Along with the disputed goal, the match report indicates a total of four expulsions and seven yellow cards. Sporting’s Kevin Comesaña received a red card for a rough tackle prior to the key play. The match report notes, “In the 90th minute, player (20) Vazquez Comesaña, Kevin, was dismissed for making a sliding tackle that hit the opponent on the side, using excessive force while contesting the ball. The opponent did not require assistance.” Comesaña will face a one-match suspension due to the incident.

On the other hand, Racing de Santander saw two players sent off. The first, Clement Jerome Michelin, was dismissed in the 86th minute for making an obscene gesture towards the assistant referee while being substituted. The referee’s report specified his dismissive remark: “Put on glasses!” This offense will lead to a minimum one-game ban. Following the conclusion of the match, another Racing player, Sangalli, was expelled for approaching the referee to protest a decision, displaying visible disapproval.

Additionally, Jorge Martínez Sariego, a member of Sporting’s coaching staff, was red carded in the 66th minute for leaving the technical area and vocally protesting a referee decision. His actions will result in a two-game suspension.

The match also saw seven yellow cards handed out, with six awarded to Racing de Santander players and one to Sporting de Gijón.
