Champlin Park, Minnesota — The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is facing controversy as Champlin Park’s starting pitcher, Marissa Rothenberger, led her team to a convincing 5-0 victory over Eagan in the Class AAAA quarterfinals Wednesday morning. Rothenberger pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out four.

This win marked Rothenberger’s impressive performance as she has thrown 21 consecutive shutout innings in the playoffs, including 14 shutout innings in the sectional finals. Her contributions have been pivotal in bringing Champlin Park to the state tournament.

Despite the victory for Champlin Park, not all in attendance were celebrating. Two anonymous parents from Eagan expressed their frustration after the game. One mother, wearing a ‘Save Girls’ Sports’ T-shirt, voiced her disappointment, stating, ‘I think it’s really unfair. I’m just really disappointed that all the schools didn’t band together and say, ‘Enough is enough.’ We’re going to protect our girls and have an equitable playing field for everyone.’

A father of another Eagan player supported her sentiments, asserting that Rothenberger’s presence on the mound is a violation of federal Title IX laws. ‘The fact that the state of Minnesota wants to ignore that is ridiculous,’ he said. He acknowledged that while athletes must adapt during competitions, knowing Rothenberger would be pitching added a layer of frustration.

Champlin Park is set to face No. 6 White Bear Lake in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon, but the debate over fairness in girls’ sports continues to cast a shadow over the tournament.
