Oscar Piastri Mclaren Singapore Grand Prix 2025

Singapore, Singapore — Controversy unfolded during the opening laps of the Singapore Grand Prix when Lando Norris overtook teammate Oscar Piastri, raising questions about team dynamics at McLaren. The incident, which saw a degree of contact between the drivers, has prompted discussion about whether McLaren should have intervened to maintain fairness within the team.

Former Renault F1 driver Jolyon Palmer analyzed the situation following the race, stating that both drivers were justified in their feelings. Piastri’s frustrations were evident as he watched his championship lead diminish. Palmer noted, ‘I can understand Oscar feeling a little bit aggrieved at this point. They were right to let the drivers race on. However, the team must manage these situations better moving forward.’

The collision occurred shortly after the race began when Norris attempted a bold maneuver to gain positions on a slippery track. Despite the aggressive move that allowed Norris to maintain third position, Piastri voiced his displeasure over team radio, questioning the fairness of the situation. ‘That wasn’t very team-like, but sure,’ he replied after the contact with Norris.

Race engineer Tom Stallard informed Piastri that McLaren was reviewing the incident, but the stewards ultimately decided not to take further action. Palmer remarked, ‘The stewards looked at it and sensibly thought there was nothing more in that.’ This decision adds to the mounting tension between teammates who are both vying for the title.

As the race progressed, Piastri faced additional challenges, including a slow pit stop that left him chasing down Norris. Despite McLaren securing their second consecutive Constructors’ Championship, the friction between Norris and Piastri could have implications for their bid for the Drivers’ Championship as they head into the United States Grand Prix on October 19.

Palmer emphasizes the importance of managing the rivalry: ‘McLaren are getting themselves into a tricky position with their manipulation of what they deem fair. This could define the championship.’ With tensions high and only a 22-point gap between the drivers, the situation will need careful navigation by McLaren’s management.
