Conwy County 5g Expansion

Conwy County Council is actively pursuing discussions with an internet provider to expand 5G services across the county in a bid to tackle widespread internet connectivity issues. A formal agreement with a UK-based internet provider could soon alleviate internet blackspots in areas such as Llandudno town centre and Colwyn Bay.

These internet blackspots are particularly problematic in high street locations and around town centers, causing inconvenience to residents and businesses alike. During a meeting of Conwy Harbour Advisory at Bodlondeb, Councillor Goronwy Edwards, the cabinet member for infrastructure, transport, and facilities, addressed the council on the potential resolution of these pressing connectivity issues.

The subject of internet connectivity was raised in the context of discussions around high-tech security enhancements on Conwy Quay, prompted by recurrent thefts and acts of vandalism targeting boats. The harbour master, having highlighted the impact of these challenges, underscored the necessity for reliable CCTV systems, contingent on robust wi-fi coverage.

Cllr Edwards disclosed that the council is in deliberations with the company Freshwave, a notable 5G provider, regarding a potential contract aimed at embedding 5G capabilities in segments of the county. “Just on the wi-fi, the council is looking to go into a contract with a company called Freshwave about the possibility of having 5G in certain areas of the county,” remarked Cllr Edwards.

He elaborated on the potential improvement, saying, “This would increase connectivity in places like the centre of Llandudno. I suggest I’ll have a word with the officer working on this scheme, and perhaps we can look at Conwy Quay and Conwy town to be included in this scheme because 5G would give us more connectivity as far as (CCTV) cameras and anything else.”

Freshwave, according to its official website, is committed to providing ‘assured connectivity for everyone,’ offering dependable wireless solutions accessible to users ‘wherever they are.’

In May, Conwy’s cabinet resolved to explore all potential funding avenues to facilitate the installation of wi-fi on the Quay, alongside live camera feeds for users. The chamber also learned that Conwy Town Council might leverage ‘Smart Town‘ funding to further this initiative.
