Cooper Flagg Leads Duke into Elite Eight with 30-Point Performance

NEWARK, N.J. — Freshman Cooper Flagg shone in Duke‘s 100-93 victory over Arizona in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on March 28, 2025. Flagg scored 30 points while contributing 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks, showcasing why he is a top contender for the upcoming NBA draft.
This remarkable performance allowed Flagg to become the first Duke player to record at least 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in an NCAA tournament game since such statistics became official in 1984, according to ESPN Research.
“That was one of the best tournament performances I’ve ever coached or been a part of,” said Duke coach Jon Scheyer after the game.
Duke will now advance to face Alabama in the Elite Eight, following their victory against Arizona, a rematch from earlier in the season when Duke won 69-55. Flagg’s performance was pivotal in the Blue Devils achieving their fifth 100-point game of the season.
Arizona had managed to keep pace with Duke until the final moments of the first half. A crucial three-pointer by Flagg as time expired pushed Duke ahead 45-39, leading to a significant momentum shift. The Blue Devils opened the second half with a 14-5 run, giving them a comfortable 15-point lead, a deficit Arizona could not overcome.
Caleb Love of Arizona, who scored 35 points, fought hard to keep his team in contention. He became the first player to score 35 points with no turnovers against a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament since Michael Finley in 1994.
“Caleb is a great person, and he’s been through a lot,” said Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd. “We hope everyone can appreciate him for the player he is.”
Flagg’s journey has been notable this season, particularly following a previous game where he set an ACC record with 42 points. Despite his impressive statistics, he remains focused on team success. “I just wanted to fully be myself, trusting my teammates and coaches,” Flagg said. “They put me in good spots tonight.”
The evening also marked a significant effort from Duke, who shot 60% from the field, 58% from beyond the arc, and 85% from the free-throw line.
As the tournament progresses, Duke aims to clinch a spot in the Final Four, seeking their first return since 2022. Their next game against Alabama will take place on Sunday, offering an opportunity to further cement their reputation in March Madness.
