COSATU Expresses Disappointment Over Zizi Kodwa’s Swearing-In as MP
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has voiced its deep disappointment following the African National Congress (ANC)’s decision to swear in comrade Zizi Kodwa as a Member of Parliament, disregarding its own step-aside resolution.
This move by the ANC is seen as poorly thought out and insensitive, undermining the party’s stance on holding public representatives accountable and its renewal campaign.
The sudden swearing-in of Kodwa, who had recently resigned as Minister due to corruption charges, raises questions about the effectiveness of the step-aside policy.
COSATU questions the logic behind Kodwa’s resignation just to be sworn in again shortly after. This action casts doubts on the ANC’s commitment to restoring public trust post the state capture era.
The labor federation acknowledges the challenges Kodwa is facing and wishes him well in his trial, but views the situation of MPs frequently appearing in court as unfavorable.
The hope was that the disappointing election results of May 29 would prompt introspection and reform within the ANC, leading to a stronger commitment to accountability.
COSATU calls for serious self-assessment at Luthuli House and hopes for a renewed dedication to upholding ethical standards among public officials.
