Costco to Close All Stores on Memorial Day, May 26

Issaquah, WA — Costco announced that all of its 617 U.S. stores will close on Memorial Day, May 26, 2025. The decision reflects the company’s tradition of closing on major holidays, which also includes Labor Day and Thanksgiving.
While Memorial Day is one of the busiest periods for retailers, Costco is opting for closure to honor the day dedicated to remembering fallen soldiers. The first Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was observed in 1868, and today it serves as a federal holiday for commemoration.
During this holiday weekend, Costco will offer online-only specials on appliances and mattresses with some discounts available until June 1 and others until June 4. Customers are encouraged to plan their shopping around the closure.
Competitors such as Walmart and Sam’s Club have confirmed they will remain open with modified hours. Other major retail chains, including Kroger, Trader Joe’s, and Target, will also operate as usual on that day, providing customers with shopping options.
Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group, noted that Costco’s closure is in line with its commitment to employee welfare and community values. He stated, “Costco closing on Memorial Day will have little impact as shoppers generally make their purchases prior to the closing so they can prepare.”
In contrast, many banks, post offices, and government offices will also close for the holiday, limiting services across various sectors, including UPS and FedEx, which will suspend operations except for essential deliveries.
Costco will resume regular hours on Tuesday, May 27. Customers planning to shop at Costco are advised to visit the store before the holiday closure to avoid any inconvenience.
