Costco’s Hot Dog Deal Remains at $1.50 Amid Inflation Concerns

Issaquah, WA – Costco customers continue to appreciate the low price of the popular hot dog and soda combo, which remains at $1.50. This price point has stayed the same since 1985 and is a significant aspect of Costco’s brand identity.
The combination of a hot dog and a drink at $1.50 is considered remarkable, especially in today’s market. Many are surprised by this deal as inflation could have turned it into a $4.55 item, more than three times its current price. According to various estimates, Costco keeps this price because the hot dog combo attracts customers who spend significantly more on groceries and other items during their visits.
Gary Millerchip, Costco’s chief financial officer, confirmed the combo’s price stability during an interview last year. “Costco’s hot dog price is safe,” he stated, supporting the retailer’s long-standing commitment to offering value to its members.
Originally, Hebrew National produced the hot dogs, but due to high demand, Costco began creating its own all-beef hot dogs under the Kirkland Signature brand in 2008, allowing them to control costs better. This strategy has paid off, as Costco sees an average of $64.75 per customer visit, which speaks to the effectiveness of their sales approach.
As Costco aims to maintain customer loyalty, they also face scrutiny over recent changes. For instance, customers have reported fewer cookies in new packages, leading to accusations of shrinkflation. Many shoppers have noticed the difference between older packs of 24 cookies and the newly offered packs of 21.
Matt Schulz, a consumer finance analyst, emphasized that shrinkflation can leave customers feeling misled. “People are frustrated that things cost more,” he said, referring to how businesses sometimes reduce product size while keeping prices the same. “When customers notice, it leaves a bad taste in their mouth.”
