Kirk Cousins Miami Dolphins Prediction

MIAMI, Fla. — Kirk Cousins could find himself in a new jersey as early as 2025, and speculation is swirling about a potential move to the Miami Dolphins.

In a recent column for Sports Illustrated, Connor Orr predicts that the Dolphins will add Cousins to their roster, suggesting he could eventually take over the starting position from Tua Tagovailoa during the season. Orr argues that Cousins, a former Minnesota Vikings quarterback, remains a valuable asset due to his experience and skills gleaned from his previous tenure with Shanahan-style offenses.

“Cousins is a coveted asset among the Shanahan-ites for his decisiveness and processing skills,” Orr writes. “Much like Aaron Rodgers coming off the broken thumb finale in Green Bay, Cousins is a bit of a distressed asset who, in my opinion, still has some good football ahead of him.”

Cousins, coming off a challenging year with the Atlanta Falcons, recorded over 3,500 passing yards, but his season was marred by a league-leading 16 interceptions and 13 fumbles. After signing him to a substantial contract, the Falcons opted to draft quarterback Michael Penix Jr., leading many to believe Cousins will be released before the 2025 season.

If released, Cousins’ $27.5 million guaranteed salary for 2025 would make him a more appealing option for teams looking for a backup quarterback, especially if he can sign for significantly less due to the circumstances of his departure.

“Adding Cousins could represent a major upgrade over the Dolphins’ current backup options,” Orr points out, referencing quarterbacks Skylar Thompson, Tyler Huntley, and Tim Boyle. Cousins would also bring experience, having started every game since 2014.

But the situation raises two important questions: Would Cousins be willing to accept a backup role? And would Miami prefer a veteran starter as their second-string quarterback? With multiple NFL teams expected to have unsettled quarterback situations post-Super Bowl, Cousins may seek a starting opportunity elsewhere.

In addition, the Dolphins remain firmly committed to Tagovailoa, evidenced by his recent four-year, $212.4 million extension. The potential for Cousins to stir competition within the quarterback room is a delicate balance against the confidence that Tagovailoa needs to succeed.

Despite previous missteps, Miami’s management may consider Cousins as both a challenge to Tagovailoa and a reliable option should the young quarterback struggle during the upcoming season.

As the off-season progresses, the Dolphins may prove to be a team to watch concerning Cousins’ potential future.
