Masters Tournament Augusta National Golf Club

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The excitement is palpable as the 2025 Masters Tournament draws closer, scheduled for April 10 to April 13 at Augusta National Golf Club. With 96 players confirmed for the prestigious event, anticipation builds for an unforgettable week in professional golf.

Among the enthusiastic competitors is Maverick McNealy, who arrives at Augusta with a remarkable rise in the rankings. After finishing last season ranked 102nd, McNealy has climbed to 16th thanks to a stellar performance at the RSM Classic, where he secured his invitation to the Masters by finishing first. “The Masters last year was a tough one for me to watch because I wanted so badly to be there,” McNealy told Yahoo Sports. “It’s always one of my favorite tournaments to watch, and it just really bugged me that I didn’t have a tee time.”

McNealy’s pathway to Augusta involved strategic planning with his team, aiming to break into the top 60 to qualify for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational, ultimately targeting the top 50 for a Masters invitation. “We had one out of the three locked up going to Sea Island,” he explained. “It was really just a Hail Mary pass to try and get the last two locked up.” His victory at the RSM Classic not only qualified him but also revitalized his spirit for competition.

“I’m really excited to just experience one of the cathedrals of golf and see what the Masters is all about,” McNealy said. He began preparing by familiarizing himself with the course, having teed it up at Augusta on March 31 for the first time. “I’m excited to broaden my field of view for some of the short game shots around the greens,” he stated, noting that his strong putting game gives him confidence. “I’ve had some success on fast, sloping greens with lots of break.”

This week, McNealy is also participating in the Valero Texas Open, where he started strong with a 4-under in the first round, tying for sixth place and just five strokes behind the leader, Sam Ryder. “There’s nothing better than playing in PGA Tour conditions on a PGA Tour setup to prepare for a major championship,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of competitive play leading up to the Masters.

The Masters field is not without its star power. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who won in 2024, is set to return to Augusta, seeking to defend his title. “Scottie is the favorite again, especially after his last win,” said a source close to the tournament. Scheffler will be paired with U.S. Amateur champion Jose Luis Ballester in the first round, continuing the tradition of pairing past champions with newcomers.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is also in focus as he attempts to complete the career grand slam. Having won The Players Championship and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year, McIlroy is benefitting from a momentum boost. “His ability to compartmentalize all the things that have transpired in the past is a strength of his,” three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson noted, commenting on McIlroy’s experience under pressure.

As the tournament approaches, fans can look forward to digital enhancements announced by IBM for the Masters app and Masters.com, including AI-driven insights and immersive 3D visuals of Augusta National. These features aim to provide an engaging and personalized viewing experience, elevating the celebration of this iconic tournament.

With the opening round mere days away, the golfing world is left wondering who will wear the coveted green jacket this year. As players finalize their preparations, the anticipation at Augusta National is building to a crescendo. For McNealy, the opportunity to drive up Magnolia Drive as a participant in the Masters is a unique thrill. “My wife and I are on a Morgan Wallen kick right now,” he joked, referencing the song he might listen to while making his memorable trip. With high hopes and eager aspirations, the 2025 Masters Tournament is set to be another remarkable chapter in the storied history of golf.
