Couples, Jiménez Share Lead at Hoag Classic Ahead of Final Round

NEWPORT BEACH, California — Fred Couples and Miguel Angel Jiménez are tied for the lead at the Hoag Classic following their stellar performances during the second round on March 22, 2025. Both golfers accomplished 7-under 64, bringing their cumulative scores to 11-under 131, one stroke ahead of Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson.
As the final round approaches at the renowned Newport Beach Country Club, spectators are eager to witness Couples, a two-time champion at this event, compete for a record third win. At 65 years old, Couples could become the fourth-oldest winner on the PGA TOUR Champions.
“I got off to a red-hot start, and then got a little scruffy, but then I finished strong with a few birdies at the end,” Couples remarked, reflecting on his performance. The charismatic golfer has been instrumental in drawing crowds at the championship, with fans passionately chanting his name throughout the tournament.
Jacobson, who is a PGA TOUR Champions rookie, finished the day with a 4-under 67 and sits at 10-under for the event. His performance has kept him firmly in contention as the tournament heads into its final day.
Before the close of the second round, Michael Allen distinguished himself with a solid performance, carding a 68 to secure fourth place at 9-under. He noted the challenge ahead, saying, “Everything is within striking distance… I have to play very well.”
The leaderboard is tight, with five players tied at 8-under, including former Hoag Classic champions Ernie Els and Stewart Cink. Els, a World Golf Hall of Fame member, aims for another strong finish this weekend.
Competing golfers expressed excitement about the tight race, as Couples and Jiménez emerged from a field where several players were vying for the lead. Notably, Couples’ round was marked by eight birdies, showcasing his ability to convert crucial putts under pressure.
Jiménez echoed the friendly rivalry, stating, “People are rooting for him, but that doesn’t bother me. He’s from here,” referring to the home crowd’s support for Couples.
As the tournament progresses, nine players remain within three shots of the lead, promising an electric atmosphere for the final round of the Hoag Classic. Couples looks to secure his first victory on the Champions Tour since 2017, adding further suspense to an already thrilling event.
With perfect weather conditions on Saturday, participants took full advantage of the opportunity, contributing to a day characterized by impressive low scores. As anticipation builds, fans and players alike look forward to what promises to be an exhilarating conclusion to the Hoag Classic.
