Dallas Cowboys Osa Odighizuwa Franchise Tag

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are facing a crucial decision regarding defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa as they approach the franchise tag deadline on Tuesday.

Should the Cowboys fail to finalize a long-term contract with Odighizuwa before the deadline, they will likely place the franchise tag on him, a move that could affect their offseason strategy significantly. Team staff writer Nick Eatman believes a long-term deal is still attainable, noting there is a common misconception that a franchise tag serves as a starting point for negotiations.

“Any long-term deal with the Cowboys won’t be at $25 million per season,” Eatman said. “The guaranteed money is the critical factor, likely falling around $50 million.”

Despite these implications, the franchise tag will not drastically change the Cowboys’ offseason needs. According to Eatman, the team will continue to assess their defensive tackle position, regardless of Odighizuwa’s status.

“They need more depth at that position,” Eatman said. “Signing Osa could alter the priority of selecting a defensive tackle in the upcoming draft.” He added that Mazi Smith is already on the roster, suggesting there will still be opportunities to bolster the defensive line.

Kurt Daniels, another team writer, echoed Eatman’s sentiments, asserting that a long-term contract is within reach. He described the franchise tag as a tactical move to buy time for negotiations rather than a drastic shift in strategy.

“If the tag is used, questions may arise about whether $25 million is too steep if a contract doesn’t materialize,” Daniels stated. “But the Cowboys must respond to their thin depth at defensive tackle.”

Without Odighizuwa, the team faces a precarious situation. His performance as one of the best 3-technique players makes his presence crucial for success in head coach Matt Eberflus’ defensive scheme.

“One way or the other, Dallas needs Odighizuwa on its roster in 2025,” said Eatman. “If utilizing the tag is what ensures that, then it must be done. Losing him to another team would prompt a significant overhaul of the offseason strategy.”

The Cowboys are in a delicate balancing act, torn between investing in their star defensive tackle while addressing pressing needs across the roster.
