Cowboys Trade for Linebacker Kenneth Murray from Titans

DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are finalizing a trade with the Tennessee Titans for linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr., sources confirmed to The Dallas Morning News on March 12, 2025. As part of the agreement, the teams will swap late-round draft picks.
Murray, who played in 14 games for the Titans last season, recorded 95 tackles, 3.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble. The trade comes ahead of the 2025 NFL season as Dallas seeks to bolster its defensive lineup.
The Cowboys will take on Murray’s two-year, $15.5 million contract, which includes a base salary of $5.99 million for the upcoming season. This financial commitment is a significant investment for Dallas, especially since the Titans are sending Murray, along with a seventh-round pick, in exchange for a sixth-round selection.
The linebacker, originally drafted 23rd overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020, saw a mixed performance in his career thus far. While he tallied impressive stats with Tennessee, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the third-worst full-time linebacker among his peers last season. Throughout his five seasons, he has often found himself outside the top rankings at his position.
Former Chargers general manager Tom Telesco declined to pick up Murray’s fifth-year option, signaling the organization’s lack of confidence in him last season. Despite being benched at points during his career, Murray managed to play a crucial role in Tennessee’s defensive plans, participating in 94% of the plays last season.
With the Cowboys also facing uncertainties on their defensive second level, they had targeted acquiring Murray as a potential solution. Following the departure of other defenders and injuries that have affected their roster, Dallas is hopeful that Murray can regain his form in a fresh system.
Murray’s departure from Tennessee comes just one year after he joined the team. The Titans are looking to improve their linebacker continuity, which has seen several changes over the years, including other recent trades involving their defense.
“This trade shows that we are committed to improving our defense,” said Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy, emphasizing the need for consistency and performance. “Kenneth brings a skill set that we believe will align well with our defensive strategy moving forward.”
The trade, which is expected to be finalized soon, marks another move in a busy offseason for both organizations. With the NFL Draft approaching, the Cowboys and Titans are reevaluating their roster needs and future strategies.
