Creature Commandos, an upcoming American adult animated television series, is set to premiere on HBO Max on December 5, 2024. Produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, this series marks the first television entry in the DC Universe (DCU) and is part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The show was written by James Gunn, with Dean Lorey serving as showrunner and Yves ‘Balak’ Bigerel as supervising director.

The series follows a black ops team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller, a character familiar from the DC Comics universe. This team, known as the Creature Commandos or Task Force M, includes characters such as Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, the Bride, G.I. Robot, and Weasel. The Bride is highlighted as the lead character in this modern adaptation of the team, which was originally created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick for Weird War Tales #93 in 1980.

The cast features a diverse ensemble including Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoƫ Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis. The series consists of seven episodes, each focusing on a different member of the team. The first two episodes will be released on December 5, 2024, with the remaining episodes being released weekly until January 9, 2025.

Creature Commandos is integral to James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s vision for the DCU, ensuring consistent treatment of characters across different mediums. The series is expected to serve as an ‘aperitif’ for the DCU before the release of the film Superman in 2025, with some characters from the series set to appear in the film.
