Creighton Basketball Victory At Seton Hall

NEWARK, N.J. — The Creighton men’s basketball team achieved a milestone Tuesday night, defeating Seton Hall 79-61 to secure its 14th BIG EAST victory of the season, tying a program record.

The Bluejays, now 21-9 overall and 14-5 in conference play, dominated Seton Hall at the Prudential Center. Creighton can set a new school record with a 15th conference win Saturday against Butler, a feat last accomplished during the 2002-03 season when the team was part of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Leading the charge for Creighton was Ryan Kalkbrenner, who registered 20 points and nine rebounds. He was supported by Fredrick King, who posted a career-high 17 points, while Olin Ashworth chipped in with 11 points and eight assists. The Bluejays shot an impressive 62.8% from the field, marking their best shooting performance in a BIG EAST game this season.

Creighton maintained control of the game early on, quickly building a lead after Seton Hall’s Garwey Dual picked up his second foul with 10:51 to go in the first half. The Bluejays capitalized on this opportunity by going on a 15-5 run, featuring three-pointers from Ashworth, Fedor Zugic, and McAndrew, including a dramatic four-point play by Zugic. By halftime, Creighton held a comfortable 35-22 lead.

At intermission, McAndrew had led all players with nine points, while Ashworth recorded six assists, five points, and four rebounds. Creighton made 7-of-16 three-point attempts before the break.

Seton Hall struggled offensively, with leading scorer Isaiah Coleman posting only six points on 2-of-10 shooting. The Pirates were led by Scotty Middleton, who managed to score eight points.

The second half saw Creighton extend its lead, as Kalkbrenner and Ashworth combined for 13 of CU’s first 16 points, pushing the advantage to 51-29 following an Ashworth three-pointer with just over 12 minutes left in the game.

Coleman eventually found his rhythm and finished with 18 points, but Seton Hall’s shooting woes continued, as the Pirates ended the game with a shooting percentage of just 35.8%.

Creighton concludes the regular season on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Butler, where they will also honor their senior players.

NOTES: With this victory, Creighton extended its streak of consecutive games with at least one made three-pointer to 1,050, the 10th-longest active streak in the nation. Additionally, Fredrick King achieved his 15th consecutive game scoring at least 10 points and recording one block, which is currently the longest active streak in NCAA.

Creighton has also solidified a top-three seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament thanks to this win, while their current six-game winning streak against Seton Hall showcases their dominance over the Pirates.
