The Crescenta Valley High School Falcons narrowly missed claiming the Gold Bracket championship at the SoCal Christmas Classic, falling to Calabasas High School with a final score of 75-61 on Dec. 30 at South Pasadena High School. The game was a hard-fought battle, with both teams showcasing their skills in a high-energy matchup.

Arman Bedrossian won the tip-off for Crescenta Valley, but Calabasas quickly took control, scoring four points within the first 30 seconds. Vaughn Zargarian put the Falcons on the board with two free throws at the 7:05 mark. The first quarter saw back-and-forth action, with Zargarian hitting a 3-pointer and Michael Sahagian adding two field goals. Sahagian’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the quarter narrowed Calabasas’ lead to 17-14.

The second quarter began with Calabasas extending their lead, but Zargarian’s 3-pointer and two free throws brought the Falcons within one point. Sahagian tied the game at 21-21, and a subsequent 3-pointer and free throws gave Crescenta Valley a 26-21 advantage. However, Calabasas regained the lead with a 3-pointer just before halftime, ending the half with a 35-32 edge.

Calabasas dominated the third quarter, scoring three consecutive baskets before Zargarian responded with a 3-pointer. Luke Derkalousdian and Garen Samuelian contributed key plays, but the Falcons trailed 55-50 heading into the final quarter. Despite Sahagian’s efforts in the fourth quarter, including two crucial baskets, Calabasas maintained their lead and secured the victory.

‘It was a tough game, but our boys fought hard,’ said Crescenta Valley coach. ‘Calabasas is a strong team, and we gave it our all.’ The Falcons’ performance highlighted their resilience, with Zargarian and Sahagian leading the scoring efforts.
