Crimson Tide Women’s Basketball Begins SEC Tournament Journey Against Florida

Greenville, South Carolina – The Alabama women’s basketball team kicks off its Southeastern Conference Tournament campaign on Thursday, facing No. 11-seed Florida after earning a first-round bye. With a 23-7 overall record and a 10-6 mark in SEC play, the No. 6-seed Crimson Tide aims to continue its successful season against a familiar opponent.
Alabama has a distinct advantage over Florida, having defeated the Gators twice this season by an average margin of 14 points, with both victories coming by double digits. The Crimson Tide’s most recent win against Florida was an 84-66 triumph in Gainesville on February 6.
“We’ve played well against Florida, and we’re confident going into this matchup,” said head coach Kristy Curry. “Our focus is to play our game and execute our game plan.”
A victory over Florida would set up a quarterfinal clash with LSU, a team the Crimson Tide upset in a thrilling overtime game on February 27. The tournament matchup adds an extra layer of anticipation as Alabama looks to build momentum heading into the later stages of play.
The SEC Tournament game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. and will be aired on SEC Network. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely, as the Crimson Tide aim to reinforce their strong postseason positioning.
Alabama concluded its regular season with a narrow loss to Oklahoma in Norman, bringing its overall record to 23-7. The Crimson Tide’s performance this season places them just four wins shy of tying the program record of 26, achieved by the 1994 Final Four team.
With the regular season behind them, Alabama’s focus shifts to the SEC and NCAA tournaments. The team is riding a wave of confidence, having won six of its last eight games, including a significant victory over LSU last week in Tuscaloosa.
The Crimson Tide’s success in the SEC has cemented their place as the No. 6 seed, following a tie for sixth in the conference with Ole Miss. Alabama holds the tiebreaker, which grants them an advantageous position moving forward in the tournament.
“This is a critical time for our program,” Curry added. “Success in the SEC Tournament can set the tone for the NCAA Tournament, and we’re excited about the opportunity to compete.”
In the event Alabama advances past Florida, they would face LSU again on Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT. An additional victory over the Tigers could solidify Alabama’s standing as a 4-seed in the NCAA Tournament, which would allow them to host the first two rounds in Tuscaloosa.
While the immediate goal is to secure a win against Florida, the Crimson Tide is unquestionably eyeing a deeper run in the SEC Tournament to achieve their historical aims.
