Cruz Azul Aims for Glory in Concacaf Champions Cup Semifinal

MONTERREY, Mexico — Cruz Azul midfielder Lira expressed confidence ahead of the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals against Tigres on Wednesday, April 22, 2025. Despite facing criticism, he emphasized the team’s unity and determination to win both this tournament and Liga MX.
“We are doing well. They try to destabilize us because they see Cruz Azul as a strong team, but since Vicente arrived, we do not want outside influences affecting us,” Lira said. He noted that the team enjoys a strong bond at La Noria, the club’s training facility. “It’s much better to win and continue in both tournaments. We want the double, and we are committed to achieving it.”
Lira acknowledged that recent performances have been strong, but the team feels that only titles can affirm their success. “There is motivation. We cannot close the chapter without lifting both trophies. We are convinced we can do it, and tomorrow is the first battle to achieve that,” he added.
Cruz Azul head coach Vicente also addressed the upcoming match, highlighting the different atmosphere of a semifinal compared to regular season games. The team lost 2-1 to Tigres in the regular season of the 2025 Clausura Tournament. “This is a different tournament and a semifinal; it has a different taste. We must approach it with the responsibility it requires,” Vicente said.
He acknowledged Tigres as a formidable opponent but insisted the team will fight for a positive outcome in the first leg of the semifinals.
