CHENNAI, India — The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South African cricketer Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh ahead of the IPL 2025 matches. The announcement came on April 18, 2025, as CSK aims to improve their performance in a season where they currently sit at the bottom of the league.

Brevis, a 21-year-old right-handed batter, is known for his dynamic batting style and is often compared to legendary cricketer AB de Villiers, earning him the nickname “Baby AB.” With only two victories out of their first seven matches, CSK’s management is hoping that Brevis’s explosive batting will inject new life into the team.

In his T20 career, Brevis has played 81 matches, scoring a total of 1,787 runs and boasting a highest score of 162. He made his T20 International debut for South Africa in 2023 and has participated in two matches for the national side. Last season, he played for the Mumbai Indians, contributing to their success and gaining valuable experience.

CSK has struggled with injuries throughout the IPL season, particularly with the absence of key players. Gurjapneet Singh, who was acquired for INR 2.2 crore, has not played due to injury, forcing CSK to seek new talent. The team had previously brought in Ayush Mhatre to fill the gap left by regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was sidelined with an elbow fracture.

“Chennai Super Kings have signed Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025,” the IPL announced in an official statement. Brevis’s inclusion is hoped to bolster a batting lineup that has struggled to find form, particularly in the middle order.

Brevis comes to CSK with a strong reputation. He was the sixth-highest run-scorer in the SA20 tournament, amassing 291 runs at a strike rate of 184.17. His previous accomplishments include a record-breaking 506 runs in the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, setting the mark for the most runs in a single edition.

The changes within the squad, including Brevis’s signing, have sparked excitement among CSK fans. His recent social media post, featuring a cryptic yellow picture, has further fueled speculation about his new role with the franchise. Fans now look to the young star to shift CSK’s fortunes as the team seeks critical wins in upcoming matches.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to contribute to a storied franchise like CSK,” Brevis said. “I’m looking forward to embracing the challenges of the IPL and helping the team perform at its best.”

As the IPL 2025 season develops, all eyes will be on Brevis as he dons the iconic yellow jersey. His ability to score aggressively could be the key to propelling CSK away from the league’s bottom and back into contention. Following the signing, fans remain hopeful that his experience in various T20 leagues, including Major League Cricket and the Caribbean Premier League, will serve him well in overcoming the challenges of the IPL.

The management is optimistic about Brevis’s potential impact as they prepare for their next match. His early performances will be crucial for CSK’s aspirations, making his debut a highly anticipated event. Will Dewald Brevis rise to the occasion and lead CSK to victory? Only time will tell.
