Cubs Continue Strong Season As Offense Shines but Busch Struggles

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Chicago Cubs have been a formidable force in Major League Baseball this season, powered by a high-octane offense. As of May 31, the team has been living up to expectations with standout performances from several key players.
Leading the charge is Kyle Tucker, who has emerged as a National League MVP candidate. With 15 home runs, 16 stolen bases, and 62 hits, Tucker’s contributions have been vital. He is just one RBI short of team leader Seiya Suzuki, who has 51.
Despite the offensive fireworks, first baseman Michael Busch is facing challenges in his third year with the club. Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer had hoped Busch would become a Gold Glove-worthy defender at first base. However, after 53 games, Busch’s offensive numbers have been average at best, posting a .253 batting average with seven home runs, 29 RBIs, and a 127 OPS+.
Busch started the season strong, hitting .270 in April, yet struggled in May, hitting just .234. He particularly has not been able to handle left-handed pitching, batting only .130 against them. “He has the potential, but maybe the pressures of expectations are affecting him,” a Cubs source suggested.
On the bright side, the Cubs have promising prospects in the wings. Jonathon Long, a 23-year-old player currently in Triple-A Iowa, is batting .352 and has an OPS of .980 through 50 games. His performance makes him a likely candidate to be promoted if Busch’s struggles continue.
The Cubs also welcomed back third baseman Matt Shaw, who is showing signs of regaining his pre-season form. After a demotion to the minors, Shaw is hitting .346 since returning to the big leagues and is seen as a crucial part of revamping the team’s offensive approach.
Ultimately, as the season unfolds, the Cubs will continue to rely on their offensive talent but may need to address Busch’s performance should he not improve. Long’s hot streak could put him in the conversation for a call-up, adding depth to the position.
