Cubs Alexander Canario Outfielder Mlb

CHICAGO, Ill. — The Chicago Cubs have designated outfielder Alexander Canario for assignment to make space for veteran infielder Justin Turner on the 40-man roster, a move reported by ESPN‘s Jesse Rogers on Thursday. This decision comes as Canario, 24, was out of minor league options and faced either securing a roster spot or being waived following spring training.

Canario joined the Cubs in the 2021 trade that sent star player Kris Bryant to the San Francisco Giants. At the time, he was considered one of the top prospects in the Giants’ system due to his impressive power numbers. However, injuries, including shoulder surgery and a significant ankle issue, have hampered his ability to maintain consistent performance.

Despite the setbacks, Canario has displayed flashes of his potential in limited opportunities. Over 21 major league games spanning the 2023 and 2024 seasons, he holds a respectable batting average of .286 with two home runs and eight RBIs. His performance at the Triple-A level has also been noteworthy, as he slashed .243 with an .850 OPS and hit 18 home runs in just 64 games in 2024.

However, concerns about his high strikeout rate persist. Canario averaged over 30% strikes at the plate during his Triple-A appearances, raising questions about his approach as he transitions to a consistent major league role. The Cubs’ outfield is currently crowded with established players and emerging prospects, leaving limited room for Canario to contribute.

As he enters a week-long DFA window, Canario’s future is unclear. The Cubs are expected to seek a trade rather than outright waivers, given the interest that could be generated from other teams looking for power in their lineup. Should he not be claimed, Canario could potentially continue his career with the Cubs at the Triple-A level.

“This is a tough but necessary move for the roster,” Rogers said. “Canario has talent, but the timing just didn’t work for him here.”

Fans are already speculating where Canario might land next, with discussions indicating that his blend of raw power and potential might catch the eye of other teams in search of outfield talent. The Cubs will need to navigate this transition carefully while considering the development of younger players vying for roles on the major league roster.
