Cubs Edge Marlins 2-1 in Pitching Duel

MIAMI, Florida — The Chicago Cubs defeated the Miami Marlins 2-1 on Wednesday, securing a series win with strong pitching and timely hitting. The game was a nail-biter, with the Cubs scoring the winning run in the eighth inning.
Cubs rookie Zach Tucker led the way with three hits, including a solo homer that gave Chicago an early lead. His home run traveled 385 feet over the right field wall, marking his 12th of the season. ‘It felt great to contribute to the team,’ Tucker said after the game.
The Cubs took their first lead in the first inning, but the Marlins quickly responded. Connor Norby tied the game with an RBI infield single in the bottom of the first, scoring Jorge López. The game remained tied until the eighth when Tucker reached base with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error by Marlins left fielder Kyle Stowers. Shaw, who had walked earlier in the inning, sprinted home to score the eventual game-winning run.
Cubs pitcher Jordan Meyer impressed in his second major league start, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one run on six hits. ‘I was focused on keeping the team in the game,’ Meyer said. ‘The bullpen did an incredible job as well.’
Reliever Alex Baeza (1-0) earned his first win since 2023 after throwing 1 1/3 innings and recording two strikeouts, while Eric Torres earned his first save of the season after a perfect ninth inning. The Marlins struggled offensively, gathering all six of their hits in the first three innings.
With this victory, the Cubs have now won seven of their last nine games. They will have a day off before facing the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game series starting Friday, while the Marlins will host the Washington Nationals.
