Cubs Eye Carlos Estevez to Strengthen Bullpen for 2024 Season
The Chicago Cubs are reportedly considering veteran reliever Carlos Estevez as a key addition to their bullpen for the 2024 season. Estevez, who split the 2023 season between the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies, posted a 2.45 ERA and converted 26 of 31 save opportunities. His performance has made him a sought-after asset in a slow-moving reliever market.
Estevez, 31, has been a reliable late-inning option throughout his career, though his 4.21 career ERA doesn’t fully reflect his potential. After being traded to the Phillies at the 2023 deadline, he excelled in a setup role, recording a 2.57 ERA and striking out 18 batters in 21 innings. His ability to close games and handle high-leverage situations makes him an attractive target for teams in need of bullpen depth.
According to Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report, the Cubs are a strong fit for Estevez and could offer him a two-year, $23 million deal. Kelly noted that Estevez’s versatility as both a setup man and closer would complement the Cubs’ existing bullpen, which includes Eli Morgan, Porter Hodge, and Tyson Miller. “Having already acquired Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians, the Cubs could build a pretty strong bullpen for manager Craig Counsell if they added Estévez,” Kelly wrote.
The Cubs, who finished 83-79 in 2023, are looking to contend in a wide-open National League Central division. Adding Estevez could provide the stability needed to compete for a playoff spot. However, his market may depend on the signing of other top relievers, such as left-hander Matt Scott, who is currently the best available free-agent reliever.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggested that Estevez might have to wait for Scott to sign before finding a new team. “Like Yates, Estévez probably has to wait until Scott signs before he can find his next team,” Bowden wrote. “I think the Cubs, who need to build up their bullpen, are the best fit for him.”
With the Cubs already making moves to strengthen their lineup, including the acquisition of Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, adding Estevez could be the final piece needed to elevate their pitching staff. As the offseason progresses, the Cubs’ pursuit of Estevez will be a storyline to watch.
