Yoan Moncada Chicago White Sox Baseball

Several teams, including the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and Toronto Blue Jays, remain active in the market for free-agent third baseman Yoan Moncada, according to a recent report. The 29-year-old infielder, who spent eight seasons with the Chicago White Sox, is drawing interest as a versatile option for teams seeking infield depth.

Moncada, a switch-hitter, has primarily played third base but also has experience at second base. His potential fit with the Cubs is particularly intriguing, as the team faces uncertainty at both positions. The Cubs recently traded third baseman Nick Madrigal and are relying on top prospect Matt Shaw, who has limited Triple-A experience. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has emphasized that Shaw will need to earn the starting role in Spring Training, leaving the door open for a veteran like Moncada to compete for playing time.

Moncada’s recent injury history is a concern, but his offensive production over the past two seasons—a .262/.311/.422 slash line with a 101 wRC+—suggests he could still contribute as a reliable bat. His addition would also provide insurance for second baseman Nico Hoerner, who is recovering from an injury and may not be ready for Opening Day.

The Mariners, meanwhile, are exploring Moncada as a potential solution to their wide-open third base competition. While his 29.4% strikeout rate over the past two seasons may not align with Seattle’s emphasis on contact hitting, the team’s limited options at the position make Moncada an appealing target. The Blue Jays, who previously expressed interest in Moncada, could also use him to bolster their infield depth, particularly if they decide to move on from young players like Ernie Clement or Addison Barger.

Moncada’s market value remains uncertain, but his ability to play multiple positions and his track record as a former top prospect could make him a low-risk, high-reward signing for teams in need of infield help.
