Cubs Prospect Gage Workman Stepping Up at Third Base

CHICAGO, IL — Gage Workman, a promising prospect for the Chicago Cubs, is set to make his third base debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The 25-year-old replaced fellow prospect Matt Shaw, who has been demoted to Triple-A Iowa after struggling with a .172 batting average this season.
Workman earned his spot on the roster following an impressive spring, where he batted .364 with four home runs and 15 RBIs, tying him for the fourth-highest RBIs among all players in MLB spring training. Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised Workman’s performance, stating, “Gage has had a tremendous camp. We’ll see where that goes.”
Selected by the Cubs from the Detroit Tigers in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft, Workman had previously faced challenges in the minors, struggling with high strikeout totals. However, he showed significant improvement in 2022 and 2023, cutting down on strikeouts while also increasing his batting average and power numbers.
“Throughout all the minor leagues, you’re always like, ‘I’m a big-leaguer,’” Workman said, reflecting on his journey. “You have to have that belief in yourself.” His middle name, “Tater,” humorously symbolizes his potential for home runs.
The Cubs have made a series of roster adjustments recently, with Workman now joining utility player Vidal Bruján and Justin Turner in a crowded third base rotation. Cubs officials are determined to improve their lineup as they continue their season with a challenging schedule ahead.
“We want to get a productive player back,” Counsell said regarding Shaw’s demotion, emphasizing the need to reset and reset during the season. As the Cubs face the Dodgers, all eyes will be on Workman to see if he can seize this newly available opportunity.
The first pitch against the Dodgers is set for 6:40 PM CT. Fans are eager to see if Workman can make a significant impact at the plate and in the field.
