Cubs Set to Face Pirates After Road Trip Mixed Results

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Cubs return home to Wrigley Field after a challenging road trip, facing off against the Pittsburgh Pirates in a four-game series starting Thursday. The Cubs posted a 4-5 record during their trip, including back-to-back series losses to the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies.
Despite the setbacks, the Cubs gained ground on rivals the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers. Starting pitcher Jameson Taillon, a former second overall pick by the Pirates in 2010, takes the mound for the Cubs. Taillon has been impressive in his last four outings, allowing just five earned runs while striking out 16 batters and walking five.
Taillon’s performance has been bolstered by a strong walk rate, though his strikeout rate remains under 20% for the second consecutive season. He has yet to face the Pirates this season, but his familiarity with their roster could play a key role. Notably, Tommy Pham has a standout OPS of 1.006 against him in 24 at-bats.
The Cubs’ lineup features Ian Happ leading off, followed by Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki. Pete Crow-Armstrong is in center field, with Dansby Swanson at shortstop and Carson Kelly catching. Michael Busch plays first base, with Nico Hoerner at second and Matt Shaw at third.
Opposing Taillon is 33-year-old left-hander Andrew Heaney, whom the Cubs faced earlier in the season. Heaney has shown resilience despite past injury issues, currently boasting a solid record in his 13 starts. However, his low strikeout rates and inconsistent walk metrics raise concerns for the Pirates.
In their previous matchup, the Cubs showcased their offensive strength, hitting home runs off Heaney as they looked to exploit his pitching mistakes. The first pitch for Thursday night’s game is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT, available on Marquee and 670 The Score.
